The government will in December roll out Meghraj, a programme that aims to move government data, services and application to remote servers, J. Satyanarayana, secretary at the department of electronics and information technology, said on Tuesday.

Meghraj, the national cloud initiative, aims to establish a secure and unified cyber space for shared government services and infrastructure, provide IT resources on demand, and optimize utilization of IT infrastructure and resources, Satyanarayana said at Cloud Summit 2013, organized by lobby group Confederation of Indian Industry.
“It is imperative to make optimum use of IT infrastructure and reuse applications, since in a large country like India, we can’t afford to have individual applications for all states. We have to adopt rapid deployment methods that we can measure and monitor,” said Satyanarayana.
Earlier in May, the government released a draft policy for implementation of the government cloud. “We have started implementing it. In the first phase, we will be launching National Informatics Centre (NIC) cloud service in Delhi by early December,” he said.
“It has infrastructure, platform, software and storage as a service, which is very important for government departments. It will be on the trial basis. It will also have an app store, which will work along Meghraj.”
“Cloud computing is undergoing a seismic shift and is fundamentally shifting the economics of IT, of businesses and of delivery of governance, however the biggest hindrance that is stopping us from adopting cloud is the fear of losing control,” said Bhaskar Pramanik, chairman, National Committee on IT, ITeS & eCommerce, CII & chairman, Microsoft India Corp. Pvt. Ltd.
