Dell‘s cloud computing business continues to grow, as the company unveiled at Dell World 2012 in Austin, Texas. With cloud revenue growing 30 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2013, Dell announced plans to continue supporting open source cloud platform OpenStack while also committing to building both public and private clouds.

Dell bought into the OpenStack concept fairly early on, and according to the company, the open nature of the platform enables customers to take advantage of hybrid cloud capabilities to move workloads between private and public clouds. Dell also committed to building its own public and private clouds on OpenStack.

At Dell World, the company Michael Dell built released a technical preview of its private cloud, dubbed Dell Cloud Dedicated. Built on the OpenStack platform, Dell Cloud Dedicated promises customers scalability, self-service access and a consumption-based usage model. It was designed to provide customers with private cloud infrastructure that meets the security and compliance needs of large enterprises and vertical organizations. The preview is going to be limited, but any customers interested in checking things out can get in touch with Dell for more information.

Although Dell is continuing to pursue open source cloud computing, the vendor hasn’t forsaken its other partners in cloud and virtualization. Dell will continue to offer the VMware-based Dell Cloud Dedicated Service to provide customers with managed private cloud IaaS.

With public clouds, Dell noted it has seen “strong momentum.” It’s also seen growth in its online ordering capability that gives customers the ability to automatically provision Dell cloud services with pre-configured bundles.

Dell World continues, and one of the topics of interest at the conference is cloud computing. That’s hardly a surprise, but we’ll keep tabs on what’s going on in Austin and keep you up to date on what Dell has in the works for its cloud computing business.
